Local Sustainable Initiatives
Sodexo is dedicated to corporate citizenship and sustaining our planet. Our goals are to focus on the environment, economy and society as a whole through various efforts. Here, at the University of Denver, we are working to make our campus dining and retail operations more earth-friendly.
We have implemented the following programs to improve your environment, economy and society:
Environmental
- We use 100% REUSABLE WARES in both resident halls with the exception of straws & napkins
- Our straws are BIODEGRADABLE and napkins are made from 100% RECYCLED MATERIALS
- Our hot cups are made of 10% POST-CONSUMER MATERIALS
- We allow patrons to bring their own REUSABLE MUG for a discounted purchase
- We BANNED polystyrene (Styrofoam) and plastic take-out bags from all of our operations on campus
- We offer REUSABLE grocery bags for use in C-store locations on campus
- We use the Apex by EcoLab dishwashing system, which helps REDUCE WATER USAGE
- We participate in pre-consumer COMPOSTING at Centennial Hall, Nelson Hall, Nagel Hall, and the Ritchie Center
- We participate in post-consumer COMPOSTING at Centennial Hall and Nelson Hall (resident dining locations)
- We provide easy access to RECYCLING CONTAINERS at all of our facilities on campus
- We are TRAYLESS at both dining halls, which reduces the amount of water and detergent used in the cleaning process
- At least 19 VEGAN MEALS are offered each week in the resident dining locations on campus
Economy
- We currently purchase LOCALLY GROWN PRODUCE from 7 growers in CO: Palisade Peaches, Olathe Corn, Rocky Ford Cantaloupes, Fagerberg Onions, Brighten Green Beans, Brighton Cabbage, & Alamosa Mushrooms
- We purchase LOCALLY PROCESSED MILK and milk products from Robinson Dairy, which are antibiotic and rBGH/rBST free
- Purchase products from LOCAL PROCESSORS: Colorado Ranchers Dairy, Mouco Cheese Co., Sparboe Farms, Ready Foods, Mountain States Rosen, Mission Foods,
Markon/Rakhra Mushroom & Condies Salad Co.
- Our retail operations offer FAIR TRADE, ORGANIC, RAINFOREST ALLIANCE CERTIFIED and BRID FRIENDLY coffees at our locations on campus
- We strive to create value to STIMULATE our LOCAL ECONOMY by offering special coupons and deals to our customers
- We foster employee TRAINING and DEVELOPMENT
- Approx. 19% of our dining room purchases are from LOCAL SOURCES, including peaches, cantaloupes, mushrooms, corn, dairy products, and bread
Society
- We DONATE EXCESS food weekly to the Food Bank of the Rockies – we donate approx. 700 pounds of food per month to the organization which provides more than 306 million meals to families in need per year.
- Our Simply to Go, In Season, and Balance, Mind, Body, and Soul programs are designed to PROMOTE HEALTHY EATING and aid in the fight against obesity
- Our Stop Hunger and Helping Hands campaigns help the FIGHT AGAINST HUNGER and malnutrition by providing food and assistance to local organizations
